WHERE IT ALL STARTED

The Stix Pregnancy Test

How the pregnancy test science works

WHAT DOES THE PREGNANCY TEST DETECT?

Stix detects a hormone called hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced when a fertilized egg attaches itself to the lining of the uterus and starts making a placenta to nourish itself. Traces of hCG start showing up in your pee at about 10 days after the egg is fertilized. If you have hCG in your urine, it will attach to the test.

HOW DO I KNOW IF STIX DETECTS THIS HORMONE?

Once Stix detects the hCG hormone, the pregnancy test displays your result on the test window. One line means you aren’t pregnant, and two lines means you are.

WHEN CAN THIS HORMONE BE DETECTED?

Stix detects hCG at 20mlU/hcG, or about 7 to 10 days after ovulation. For the best results, we recommend taking the test at least three days before your missed period or 19 days after you had sex. Your levels of hCG increase every single day so the longer you wait to test, the stronger the results will be. If you do decide to test early, definitely do it first thing in the morning, before drinking any water.

I TOOK THE TEST—HOW DO I KNOW IF I'M PREGNANT?
NEGATIVE

If only control line appears, the test result is negative which means that you are not pregnant.

POSITIVE

If both test line and control line are visible and the test line is darker than or equal to the control line, the test result is positive, which means you are pregnant.

INVALID

If there is no distinct pink-purple colored line visible both in the TEST area and CONTROL area the test is invalid. We recommend retaking the test now.

THE NEXT STEP

The Stix Ovulation Test

How the ovulation test science works

HOW DOES THE OVULATION TEST WORK?

This test measures for high levels of LH (luteinizing hormone) in your pee. LH surges 24-48 hours before you ovulate. When you ovulate, your ovaries release an egg. When that egg pairs up with a sperm cell after sex, you can get pregnant. You’re the most fertile on the day of the LH surge and the day after.

SO, WHEN DO I TAKE THE TEST?

Think of your usual cycle length, AKA the number of days from the first day of your last period to the start of your next period (period tracking apps are a great way to get this info). Based on this number, refer to the chart below to determine your best day to test. For example, if your cycle is usually 28 days and the first day of your last period started on the 7th, you should start testing on the 18th.

It’s best to test first thing in the morning. If you take the test later in the day, don’t drink liquid or pee for a few hours before testing, as either will dilute the test results.

I TOOK THE TEST—HOW DO I KNOW IF I'M OVULATING?
NEGATIVE

If only control line appears or the test line is lighter than the control line, the test result is negative which means that no LH surge is detected.

POSITIVE

If both test line and control line are visible and the test line is darker than or equal to the control line, the test result is positive, which means ovulation will likely happen in the next 24-48 hours.

INVALID

If there is no distinct pink-purple colored line visible both in the TEST area and CONTROL area the test is invalid. We recommend retaking the test now.
