When to Take a Pregnancy Test on Birth Control

3 minute read

Taking a pregnancy test doesn't have to be a confusing or intimidating experience. If you've ever wondered if and when you can take a pregnancy test on birth control, you're not alone. A lot of women ask us about how birth control does or doesn't interfere with testing. Read on for answers!

can I take a pregnancy test on birth control?

Why take a pregnancy test on birth control?

Birth control isn't 100% effective. That means as secure as your IUD is or as regularly as you take your pill, there's always a chance you can get pregnant. Plus, many forms of hormonal birth control can make your period light or non-existent. For example, Stix co-founder Cynthia doesn't get her period from her birth control, so she tests every two months. We're all about peace of mind.

But how often and when should I take a pregnancy test?

Knowing when to take a pregnancy test if you have an irregular period or no period from birth control can be confusing. Especially because tests on the market today often say “3 days before your missed period” for best results.

What does it mean if you don't get your period from birth control? It’s best to test at least 19 days after having sex. If you’re having sex on the regular, you can subscribe to Stix pregnancy tests  for peace of mind. We offer subscriptions that ship out every one, two, or three months. The frequency is up to you, and you can cancel or pause shipments of the pregnancy tests at anytime.

Does birth control interfere with pregnancy test results?

Don't fret. Birth control does not interfere with pregnancy test results. As soon as you get pregnant, your body starts to produce a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). Stix pregnancy tests detect this hormone and displays the result after five minutes. Birth control hormones do not interfere with hCG.

What's the best way to buy a pregnancy test?

When you don't want to deal with the inconvenience or run into a familiar face at the drugstore, Stix pregnancy tests protect your privacy and are delivered in a discreet, tiny envelope. When we say discreet, we mean it. The envelope won’t say Stix or pregnancy test anywhere visibly on the outside — not even on the return address.
