How to Stay Healthy During Warm Weather

With warmer weather finally here, it’s time to get outside. As ready as we all are for summer, trying to stay healthy is the top priority and there are easy things you can do to take care of your health in the heat.

Sunscreen

Wearing sunscreen is important all year round, but especially in the warm spring and summer months. Sunscreen helps to protect our skin from the sun’s rays and helps prevent sun damage and the risk of skin cancer. Today in the US, 1 in 5 people will develop skin cancer by the age of 70.

While SPF protection doesn’t guarantee your skin won’t be damaged by the sun, it blocks the UV rays and greatly reduces the chance of getting sunburnt. Also, wearing sunscreen helps protect your skin from wrinkles and age spots. As annoying as it might be to remember sunscreen all the time, your future self will thank you.

Hydrate

If you’re anything like us, remembering to drink enough water is a constant struggle. As the weather gets warmer and we spend more time outside, the sun starts to dehydrate us, and staying hydrated is all the more important.

According to the Mayo Clinic, adult men should drink about 15.5 cups of water a day and women should have 11.5 cups. Alcohol also dehydrates your body so try making a point to mix in a glass of water if you are drinking. Getting a reusable water bottle also helps remind yourself to hydrate!

Wet swimsuit bottoms

Sitting around in a wet bathing suit all day is never fun, but the UTI or yeast infection that can follow is even worse. Take care of your urinary tract health this summer by avoiding wearing wet bottoms longer than you have to and taking UTI daily protection supplements. If you do end up with a UTI, however, don’t let it ruin your summer plans. We recommend keeping our UTI fast-acting pain relief on hand in case a UTI strikes.

Rest

Staying healthy in the heat also means taking care of your mental and physical health. Being outside in the heat can make you pretty exhausted, even if you just laid on the beach all day. Listening to your mind and body when they ask for rest is just as important as when your body craves movement.

At the end of the day, only you know your limits and what is right for your health. Making small efforts like these will go a long way and your mind and body will thank you later. For more resources like this, head to the Stix Library.
